Attendance
(California Education Code section 48200)
- Pomona Unified School District believes that regular attendance plays a key role in the success a student achieves in school.
- The District urges parents to make sure their children attend school regularly and to schedule medical and other appointments so that a student misses none, or only a small portion of the school day.
- The higher the District’s daily attendance rate, the more a student will learn and the greater the amount of funding that the District will receive from the state for classroom instruction and academic programs.
- We encourage you, as parents, to avoid unnecessary absences that reduce your child’s opportunity to obtain good grades and reduce District resources.
Students who attend Alcott School every day during the entire school year and leave early no more than twice due to a medical appointment (dr.’s note required) will receive a “Perfect Attendance Certificate.”
Students who attend Saturday School to make up all absences during the school year and leave early no more than twice due to a medical appointment (dr.’s note required) will receive an “Attendance Recognition Award.”
We are required by law to account for all absences. If your child is absent from school please call the office at (909) 397-4552 / annex office (909) 397-4555 or send a note when your child returns. Poor attendance at school may result in less than satisfactory academic progress. A doctor’s note is required for all absence is excess of 3 days.
Excessive absences and/or tardies or if a child is judged to be habitually truant (E.C. 48260, E.C. 48261*, E.C. 48262*) a report may be filed with SARB (School Attendance Review Board). The School Attendance Review Board, which investigates the causes of tardies or absences, refers parents to community agencies if necessary and can impose sanctions on parents. SARB may then refer the case to the Probation Department of the District Attorney (SART) for prosecution.
If a student attending Alcott School is on an inter- or intra-district transfer, the transfer can be revoked for habitual tardiness, excessive absences and/or inappropriate behavior. Any student absent from school will have the opportunity to make up class assignments. It is the responsibility of each student to make-up class assignments. The teacher will determine what arrangements need to be made for making up work.

A parent/guardian is required to provide an explanation of the absence when their child returns to school following an absence. The parent/guardian may explain the absence in person, by telephone, or in a written, signed note. Excused Absences
If an absence remains without an explanation by the fourth day of having returned to school, it will be recorded as unexcused and cannot be changed. Always contact your school for every absence of your student. Failure to provide valid excuses will subject you to the truancy laws.
